Hunted was first published in 1994 by Hodder & Stoughton. Reader’s Digest bought the global rights so they could include the book in their well known Condensed Books series.
Co-author Joe McNally had just started working at Aintree racecourse, home of the Grand National, and after dealing with an annual issue in the track’s PR prep for the Grand National, one of those “what-if?” moments so beloved of writers came into his mind. The posing of that single one-sentence question (not published here to avoid spoilers) became the whole plot and the book was written relatively quickly. Cover design by Kit Foster
A Writing Lesson
When the rights reverted to Joe and Richard and a rewrite was planned for the eBook version, they took note of the fine job that Reader’s Digest had done in cutting almost 20,000 words from the original novel without any damage to the story. So Hunted, like all the rewritten titles in the series, got the streamlining treatment and the pace is almost relentless.
Eddie has just returned to race-riding, but many in the sport remain wary of him and he is getting so few rides he is considering quitting. That’s how the story opens. But, as so often happens in the real world of racing, potential resurrection is just around the corner at Haydock racecourse one gloomy afternoon.
Eddie is alerted by a young woman who works for the Jockey Club that a jockey has not turned up to ride the favourite in the big race. She urges Eddie to seek out the trainer and ask for the ride. He does so and ends up riding the first major winner since his comeback. Racing seems worthwhile once more and Eddie dreams of what is to come. Then the jockey that Eddie replaced is found dead and Eddie becomes a suspect in the murder case.
As Eddie sets out to defend his reputation, another jockey is found dead, and another, and Eddie discovers that the killer has a list and that Eddie is on it. Nobody can figure out how the murderer is working through his list of targets, nor what his motive is. If Eddie cannot break that deadlock and unravel the clues he knows he will die…he just doesn’t know when.
We are in the process of making the books available on all platforms – not just Amazon. Once that is complete all the links to those stores will appear here.
