Book four finds Eddie well established and with a retainer to ride for millionaire owner from Barbados, Broga Cates. Much of the inspiration for Running Scared came from Richard’s visit to Barbados. The racecourse there, known as the Garrison Savannah (it’s built on an old military training area) holds happy memories for Richard which derive from more than just pleasant days at the races. Richard’s son, Mark rode a horse called Garrison Savannah to a short-head victory in the 1991 Cheltenham Gold Cup while Richard watched and commented on the race from the BBC unit.
When Eddie’s friend and mentor, Bill Keating dies in a horsebox at his daughter’s birthday party, everyone says it was suicide…except Eddie Malloy. Bill’s widow, Cathy is about to lose her house and business unless Eddie can help her prove it’s not suicide.
As Eddie begins to gather evidence, a menacing midnight phone call warns him to stay out of it. That’s the wrong thing to say to Eddie Malloy and it sets Eddie off on a complicated chase through a maze of scams and deaths which stretch from the gentle racetracks of England to beautiful Barbados where Eddie endures a terrible torture – one which, his enemy threatens, is the ‘last stop before death’.
The above is the plot summary on Amazon, but it’s a many-faceted plot with things seldom panning out as it seems they might – on many fronts. There are new characters in Broga Cates, the multi-millionaire who pays Eddie a retainer and provides him with a flat in the yard of his trainer Charles Tunney. There is much else to be told, but it’s risky summarising it here as it could lead to spoilers.
We are in the process of making the books available on all platforms – not just Amazon. Once that is complete all the links to those stores will appear here.
