The longest tale of all is attached to this book. In our talks with Harper Collins (after leaving Hodder & Stoughton) our editor, the ever helpful Nick Sayers, suggested we concentrate much more in character. We decided to try to launch a new character in book one and give him a book of his own- an Eddie-free zone. The plan was to then have the new character, Frankie Houlihan, team up with Eddie in the next book to form a partnership which would, hopefully, strengthen should we get a contract beyond those two books.
So, Frankie Houlihan was launched in this, which was initially entitled Joseph’s Mansions. St Joseph’s Mansions was a housing project in Dublin that was devastated by drug dealers and users. One of the book’s central characters lived there and, for Joe, at least, it was an important part of the story. In hindsight, the title was a poor choice: titles can really help sell a book. So, we decided to change the title to For Your Sins for the eBook version. For Your Sins resonated with the main character, Frankie Houlihan, a priest who, early in the book, leaves the priesthood after falling in love with Kathy Spencer.
The book was well reviewed but we’d been careful to declare in foreword that it was not part of the Eddie Malloy series. That declaration seems to be what strangled sales. Once data told became available and we could run accurate comparisons, we found that, measured against the Eddie Malloy books (looking at that sales chart as 100%) FYS sold just 25% in comparison. So, we had a book with a good plot that was losing 75% of readers/buyers simply because Eddie was not in it. We liked Frankie’s character, as did many of the readers who bought the book, so it was with reluctance that we decided to write Frankie out of it and replace him, effectively, with Eddie. In November 2016, For Your Sins was republished as book 9 in the series. We will see what difference that makes.
A note here for readers who bought the original Frankie Houlihan book and would now like to buy the ‘new’ version. Amazon has an auto-protect system in place to prevent a book being accidentally bought twice. If you have problems downloading this second version from Amazon, drop Joe an email: Joe@eddiemalloy.com
A Dublin gangster hires a young English scientist and plans to plunder the world of racing with an ingenious idea. Trip Healy, a handsome vet in his thirties must become a criminal to prepare for his impending death. 19-year-old Jess Wainwright sees from the back of a runaway horse that her dreams and her life are endangered. And Danny Deever, a bitter ex-jockey delights in harming the innocent.
Can Eddie Malloy defeat this cast of deranged and dangerous men and keep his friends alive? Another searing mystery thriller in this well established and much loved series.
We are in the process of making the books available on all platforms – not just Amazon. Once that is complete all the links to those stores will appear here.
